What is considered a large business?

Large businesses typically have substantial annual energy consumption: over 55,000 kWh for electricity or 200,000 kWh for gas. This includes manufacturing plants, large offices, retail chains with multiple locations, and distribution centres.

If you've never switched business energy, you could be on expensive out-of-contract or rollover rates. For high-consumption businesses, this means significantly higher costs than necessary.

Large business vs SME energy

SMEs (up to 250 employees) often have single sites and straightforward fixed tariffs. Large businesses have access to more complex contracts: flexible, pass-through, and fully bespoke options — with greater potential savings.

Tip: Large businesses can negotiate contracts that smaller businesses can't access.

Energy plans for large businesses

Fixed contracts

Lock in set price per unit for 1–4 years. Predictable budgeting, protection from market rises.

Part flexible contracts

Fix part of your energy usage, keep flexibility on the rest. Balance security and market gains.

Fully flexible contracts

Complete control to ride market fluctuations. Benefit from falling prices but risk rises.

Pass-through contracts

Energy price fixed; non-commodity charges (network, policy) passed at market rate.

Green energy contracts

100% renewable or blended. Available as fixed, flexible, or pass-through. CCL exempt.

Half-hourly (HH) meters

Commonplace for high-energy usage businesses. Sends readings every 30 minutes for accurate monitoring. Mandatory if peak usage exceeds 100 kWh per half hour.

Read HH meter guide

Multi-site meters

One supplier, one contract, one end date across all your premises. Saves time, admin, and often secures better rates through consolidated purchasing power.

Climate Change Levy (CCL) & Energy Intensive Industries (EII)

The CCL applies to businesses consuming over 33,000 kWh of energy per day — well below the average large business usage. Renewable energy is exempt from CCL.

EII Scheme: Eligible large businesses can receive up to 85% off charges for renewable energy policies (Contracts for Difference, Renewable Obligation, Feed-in Tariffs).
